Moxyland edition by Lauren Beukes Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I read Zoo City first and there were a few short stories at the end of my copy from a writing contest related to Moxyland. Those are what really inspired me to buy this book. If short stories from readers in this world were so intriguing, I couldn't wait to see what Lauren Beukes had created.Moxyland wasn't as strong as Zoo City, but it built an interesting world nonetheless. Most of the characters were a bit unpleasant, but that's what made them realistic. I understood why they took the paths they did even when I disagreed with them, which I think is a mark of good writing. Their backgrounds were vivid and colorful. They had bad habits and did bad things to other people and made the wrong decisions, but all those things enabled the plot to go where it eventually did. I was impressed by how everything came together to bring some of the characters full circle.
I'd love to read more books in this universe, and I'd probably pick up anything else written by Lauren Beukes without hesitation. I hope she keeps writing in this vein.

Moxyland edition by Lauren Beukes Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Ms. Beukes debut novel is a compelling story of what could come to pass for our technology-besotted society. She weaves multiple storylines effectively, showing what could or will come, as the world continues to sacrifice privacy for convenience. Sometimes it is hard to navigate the techno-speak combined with South African slang, but the book is worth the extra effort by the time one is heading towards the inevitable ending.
I spent the time in this book feeling disoriented while also spotting and leaning into ideas and concepts that seemed both possible, if not eventualities. This is a book that you plunge into an see where it takes you. I was pleasantly surprised by the layering of politics and pop culture, African specific memories and points of reference, and interesting characters. Well done!
fantastic book that you should read. the writing is stupendous, in depth "real" characters and conversations, story is a cautionary tale that hits you at the end, building up throughout the novel. it's a harrowing vision of the future, as seen thru the eyes of 4 characters, a vision that closely mirrors today's innovations for those who can afford them, and a dusty bunch of nothing for those who cannot, under the control of the government and corporations.
i read and just totally loved her second novel, "zoo city", which won the 25th arthur c. clarke award for best sci-fi novel, and was shortlisted for the man booker prize (uk awards). this young south african journalist is such a great writer that after finishing "zoo city", i searched for other stuff by her. i found she had a first novel, "moxyland". i bought it without even bothering to find out what the subject was. didn't care, just wanted to read more by this amazing author. both books take place in south africa, and there are actually music cds created for both books.
i recommend you read both books- this lady is going to win the hugo and the nebula one day, and that day isn't going to be that far away; her work is just that unique and powerful. 5 stars for both novels. this is an impressive new voice that has arrived- a preeminent sci- fi writer who will hopefully write many more books. get in on the ground floor.
An incredibly skillful, perfectly crafted story that should please SF fans of any caliber. Really, if you like science fiction in a near-future setting, just give it a try. There's nothing I can say that will prepare you for how good this book happened to be. I can't gush enough about this book. The characters feel real, the tech is imagination-grabbing and cool, the plot is thoughtful... Just, c'mon. Read it.
Moxyland tells of a dystopian future where you are either law abiding and therefore connected or a criminal and shutout of the system unable to work and buy what you need. There is no middle class. No room to breathe between these extremes. You tow the line or end up in the gutter.
The main strength of this novel is in its world building and dystopian vision that is only too believable. The plot goes slowly but steadily. I enjoyed it enough that I will give other books by this author a try.
Beukes weaves together several threads into an enjoyable and disturbing dystopian story that seems on the edge of being our near future. Fortunately, she doesn't make the mistake of tying things up too neatly. This is a world that may have more to tell. It would be worth reading more stories if she decides to write them, but you aren't left hanging. Neatly done.
The characters are real people. Flawed, petty, idealistic but foolish, selfish, caring, and genuine. They each try to find their own way of loving in a cruel world where freedom isn't a right, it's a stingily handed out privilege.
The book tells the story of a world we should all want to avoid, but seems more and more inevitable.
I started this book, thinking how interesting it is because it's set in a dystopian world where being disconnected from your online device is almost like a death punishment. Very cool idea, and I enjoyed reading how the characters interacted in this new world. The only problem I have is that none of the characters in this book are really that likable. That might be on purpose but it makes it really difficult to keep reading when you can't connect with any of the main characters. Even the guy that wants to lead a revolution is kind of annoying to listen to in your head after just a few pages in his POV. I will try out Zoo City and see if it's any better err
