The Authoritative And Dramatic Account Of The Most Remarkable Relic In The Christian World.

The Shroud John Walsh 9781258381714 Books

Author John Walsh wrote in the Preface to this 1963 book, the Shroud of Turin, "Unlike so many other relics of the Passion... bears its testimony on its surface---testimony that can be examined and investigated... this examination has been conducted along a number of different lines: history, anatomy, chemistry, exegesis, legal medicine, photography, art history and textile manufacture, to name the foremost. But, perhaps surprisingly, this investigation has not been an official concern of the Catholic Church... It has advanced almost haphazardly ... [through] these voluntary scholars ... This book is an account of the work of these men in their persistent probing for the Shroud's secret... Only this much is certain: The Shroud of Turin is either the most awesome and instructive relic of Jesus Christ in existence... or it is one of the most ingenious, most unbelievably clever, products of the human mind and hand on record..." (Pg. 7-9)

He records early skepticism: "On the basis of the documents, Ulysse Chevalier declared firmly that the image on the linen cloth was a painting executed in the Middle Ages... The negativity of [Secundo] Pia's photograph he dismissed as only apparent. In this, he was supported by Hippolyte Chopin, a leading artist and photographer, who asserted that the negative aspect was the result of a technical accident. 'The photograph proves nothing,' Chopin assured him in a letter. 'absoutely nothing.'" (Pg. 54-55)

He states, "At present, the three main branches of sindonology are scripture, history and science. In the first two categories a huge amount of energy has been expended by both sides but it has become apparent that the result is a stalemate. Where evidence depends on literary interpretation, based in its turn on linguistics and psychology, there can never be a decision that will satisfy everyone, certainly none that can carry an over-riding conviction to the many." (Pg. 129)

He notes in his conclusion, "Though believers in the relic claim that the work already done, through the pictures, amply proves authenticity, they are anxious that the cloth itself should finally be submitted to direct testing." (Pg. 133)

This is an "early" summary, and there are obviously many more recent, more comprehensive summaries; but those interested in the Shroud will likely be intersted in this as well.
