The varying poetics of both ancient and modern Arabic poetry inflect this book-long exploration of the materiality of the body, negotiating the terrain of love and its denials.Zaher explores the landscape of life fraught with disappointments and occasional triumphs through fragments, lyrics, metatextual pauses, stutterings, translations of ancient poetry, and the occasional late-night email. This epic foray into fraught emotional territory is alive with Zaher s particular gift of keen observation, deft whimsy, and superb intelligence.

Probably one of my favorite 21st century poets. I discovered Zaher at a museum gift store in LA & was captivated by the title. After flipping through just 2 pages, I quickly identified with his sarcastic enthusiasm. Zaher is brilliant with his words.

Consequences of My Body Maged Zaher 9781937658502 Books Reviews

Maged Zaher’s new book of poems The Consequences of My Body reads something like a novel, and as it begins it gives off the complex pleasures of something like Kundera's romances of Prague spring. A revolution is taking place somewhere, but in the immediate present a man writes to and e-mails a woman, both of them trying to learn to love again after broken relationships. They are differently raced, apparently, for he is afraid she may not love his brown body, or may view him as an exotic catch perhaps, though she also seems exotic to him—he is always worried about projecting his own thoughts and feelings onto her, onto others in general. Zaher animates this section of his book with the continual projections that our hands make like casting rabbit ear shadows on the wall, our hands work for us and against us. Note the ambiguity of the raised hands in the following passage

“In airports we get to raise our hands while a glass door takes a half turn around us, and tells eagerly awaiting people the status of our innocence. We feel silly in this position, apparently a network node is where we can be accused of hatred.” Where once raising one’s hand was seen as a sign of democracy, here it shows a bowed compliance with the state and its mechanics of enforcing same. “Mere hands” are assigned the task of combatting the middle class, while performing their more traditional duties of “touching each other inappropriately” and “jerk (ing) off amid tanks.”

Cooking breakfast, typing slowly, scattering popcorn around “it is useful to partake in the end of civilization.” At the other end of the spectrum, The cagey poet contributes a series of translations from classical Arab poets of love. Miraculously they leap into life in Zaher’s sensitive hands (there’s those hands again! Sorry, it must be on my mind), but if you’re like me, and know little about the classic Arab poets, this will be the real shock, that they sound like they were writing today, perhaps to you personally. Zaher melds the political and the personal, the present with the past, in exhilarating ways. Beautifully designed by San Francisco artist Margaret Tedesco, The Consequences of My Body has a supple, slightly elongated shape in your hands, it’s almost as if you can feel it still growing, or rising like bread. It will hold you for a long, long time.
